Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle
ULMS Education Department has three primary programs: G.R.O.O.M., the Teen Drop-In Center, and the Workforce Development Programs which are also available to the families of youth. We have several programs that will move them on a path of success. ULMS will use our current programs to provide services that will uplift youth and empower youth/family to pursue careers and education.
G.R.O.O.M.
The G.R.O.O.M. (Gifted Regardless of Oppressive Methods) program is offered through a CBT group that meets two times a week virtually over Zoom. It is a catalyst to help our youth make community connections and provide them a safe space to express their frustrations and trauma. Group sessions cover a curriculum and also use motivational interviewing and promote community pro-social activities.
The G.R.O.O.M. program operates as a transformational mentoring program to facilitate the seven pillars that make up the Covenant of Peace. Covenant of Peace Pillars includes: What love looks like, My Life Matters, The Act of Forgiveness, My Family is My All, My Word is My Bond, The Impact of Absence, and The Power of the Tongue. As youth learn and understand these principles they build a connection to their family and community in meaningful ways that transform their lives.
G.R.O.O. M. also provides mentorship, community engagements on youth panels, and activities like engaging in the elections process in South King County with Progress Pushers another youth organization for youth.
Teen Drop-In Center
In addition, youth will also have access to ULMS’ Teen Drop-In Center where they will engage in recreation and education activities including chess clubs, book clubs, and suggested interests generated by young people. Other resources readily available to them will be homework/tutoring sessions; virtual Zoom helpdesk, job readiness, and resume building skill training; college application prep; community giveback projects, and barista training. Outdoor activities may consist of Double-Dutch competitions, horticulture/gardening, etc. Activities for the evening, (scheduled with parental and court consent) can include G.R.O.O.M mentorship group meetings, cooking classes, talent shows, movie night. Youth from this program will have scheduled times when they are allowed to participate in structured activities. ULMS has two passenger vans that will be available to transport youth safely to and from program destinations and court appearances.
Workforce Development Training
Our workforce development training is available for youth as well as their family. The training include:
• Career Bridge; a job readiness training program that assists with resume building, soft skills, digital literacy, credit/budgeting training, email etiquette, job searching, and mock interviewing.
• Digital Literacy training will give people with just a high school diploma a way to gain access to opportunities that can lead to livable wages. Skills learned are keyboarding, surfing multiple search engines, Word/Google Docs, how to create, edit, save and store documents. They will receive the IC3 credential upon completion.
Tech Hire; a cloud-based certification-training course that prepares participants for IT technical support careers for cloud hardware/software. Upon completion, they will receive the ASW Cloud Practitioner certification.
• Youth Internship program in the construction trades. This program offers youth experiences in learning how to use power tools, worksite safety, acquire work gear and tools, OSHA and flagging certifications as well as experience building Tiny Homes for citizens experiencing homelessness.
• There are (#) of Job Developers ready to connect clients with a list of second chance employers including corporate and local business human resources departments.
